In May 2009, four residents from North Belfast travelled to Geneva, Switzerland. They hoped to influence the review of the United Kingdom by the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

As a result of their work, the residents secured the following recommendations:

“The Committee recommends that the human rights framework, including the Equality Impact Assessment, be effectively implemented in Northern Ireland, particularly in the context of urban regeneration programmes by ensuring the participation of the affected populations and the development of adequate policies and targeted measure to promote substantive equality, provide for improved health care, as well as increase in skills training and employment opportunities for young people and adequate housing programmes for the poor and, in particular, Catholic families.”
